Brass instrument trombone in earlier times was called the sackbut and greatly resembled the modern day trombone. The trombone is mainly used as a tenor voice and it features a mouthpiece that is in the shape of a cup. Trombone also has the slide system, and a center overlapping nine foot tube. Trombones are mostly made of brass and at times they also come with nickel plating. The fundamental note of the trombone is the third B flat which is below middle C and it is produced with the slide closed. Ludwig von Beethoven used this brass instrument in his Fifth Symphony as did Mozart in his other works.Earlier, the trombones were used in religious settings such as in church and chamber music that required soft and mellow tunes which the instrument produced mainly due to its thick metal and the narrow bell. The use of the trombone in orchestras began to take place in 1850. Twentieth century uses of the trombone were made largely by composers such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Aaron Copland, and host of others. Trombones come in slides and also in valves today. There are also regional variations in the trombones such as the German, Austrian and French versions of the trombones.
